Hawk attacks, limited fresh food….bet you never thought about all the challenges free range hens have in the winter.
Early in November we had our first hawk attack of the winter, so we moved our hens and Mr. Roo to their smaller winter home. Hawks seem to be reluctant to swoop into a more confined area to catch their dinner, so we moved the hen houses closer together, decreased the range area, and put them in the pasture with Turk (our Anatolian Shepherd Livestock Guardian Dog) so he can help guard them by running and barking at swooping birds of prey.

Standing guard on the front porch rail this foggy morning is Mr. Peacock. He’s made it through another winter! He’s very old, but still beautiful, as you can see in these pictures.

Mr. Peacock possesses such stunning colors and elegant posturing. Such a lovely sight on this foggy Ground Hog Day early morning.

Thank you to all our lamb customers this year for valuing our pasture raised lambs enough to once again contribute to another sell out for our September sale. We wish we had more lambs to sell, because the demand was great. We will be breeding earlier this year as a result of many of you asking for older lambs, so be sure to watch for our sales next year. You will be able to come to the farm early and reserve yours for the holiday so you can just pick them up when you are ready.
We will have packaged lamb cuts to sell from our farm in another couple of months, so be sure to subscribe to our farm blog here to get the notice when the meat is available. We look forward to seeing our returning customers and meeting new friends!
