Let’s Talk Dream Trucks!

When my niece was little, she used to say, “It’s hotter than blue blazers!” Today was one of those “blue blazer” days, but we still had a great time showing a family around the farm. I hope you notice that we had a princess visit us today (see the photo below). We have lots of princesses come visit Fox Trot Farm these days! The children got to pet the lambs, see the big guardian dogs and the small border collies, and they picked up eggs straight from the hen house. Then their grandma bought a honey bear jar filled with raw honey for their biscuits in the morning. Yum!

Now let’s talk about dream trucks! You know that every farmer needs a truck, and for years Farmer Bob has used this big Dodge Ram truck for bird hunting and an old little green truck for the farm. Now he’s decided to sell the big truck and the little old truck and buy Farmer Debbie her very own “Debbie Friendly” truck!

The Life & Times of a Country Vet

Yesterday was a big day for me, and an exhausting one, too. As much as I dearly love the farm and all our animals, this heat and humidity is wearing me down, and wearing a beekeeper’s suit adds to the joy (!) and I’m thinking that I should figure out a way to add air conditioning to it and I’d make a million $$$ because beekeepers all across the South would be ordering the new AC suits from me.

Farmer Bob is still working his REAL job, and that takes him out of town for days on end during the week, and sometimes over a weekend, too, although not very often, thank goodness! On those days that he is gone, I don’t get too much done except just keeping up with farm work. Continue Reading →

Carly Comes Home with a Friend!

Maybe you remember that in April we sent our Border Collie, Carly, back to Georgia with breeder/trainer Brian Cash for three months of herding training. Boy, was that a tough thing to do since she’d become such a big happy part of our farm life! But we bought her as a pup to give her a good upbringing and then have her trained so she could help us with the sheep, so we had to let her go. Here’s Carly and me with Brian back in April. (The other merle dog is Neal, Carly’s dad.)

Fast forward to July, and it was time to go to Georgia to get Carly. I was afraid she wouldn’t remember me, but she was so excited to see us! Brian put her out with some of his sheep and we were impressed by all she had learned and excited to work with her, too. We had three lessons with her and with some of the other dogs, and now we know just how much more training WE need. I’ve been looking for someone close by to help me with that training, but no luck so far. If anyone knows of any trainers (herding dogs) please let me know.

Before we left Georgia, Brian told us about a dog he had that he was looking for a home for….a good, well-trained dog that just didn’t have what it takes to advance to herding trials. He thought our farm would be perfect…she would be a companion and yet would still be able to work the sheep with us, with really no expectation of anything other than just being our farm dog. We slept on it overnight and then, the next day, we asked to meet her and ultimately decided to adopt her into our family. We are so grateful to have Blaire (thank you, Brian!) in our lives and on our farm! She is the sweetest girl, and a fast learner. We’re Officially Certified South Carolina!

Today we got the confirmation that our farm is certified South Carolina!

We are so excited about this because our state will now promote our farm products. What a wonderful program this is for small farmers! Folks like us work very hard to deliver quality food products, and without the huge corporate marketing dollars like you see from Tyson and Smithfield. We are the farmers you want to meet when you buy your meat, eggs, and honey, because we can tell you how we manage our farm and show you our healthy and happy animals living in the sunshine and fresh air in the rolling hills of Lancaster County. You can see our beehives, busy with bees doing their job of making honey, and I can show you the extractor we use to harvest honey, and that honey comes from our hives filled with bees that forage from wild flowers on and near our farm. Oh, Honey! I can’t believe how “sweet it is!”

Our honey is from local wild flowers, and is raw (unpasteurized), unfiltered (so it contains beneficial pollen), dark, sweet, and rich. This is the honey you drizzle over bleu cheese topped sliced Granny Smith apples layered on crostini, or swirl into your morning oatmeal….it’s for finishing the dish and accenting its remarkable flavor.

Honey for Sale!

Our bees have been busy and so have we. Yogi Bear may steal pick-i-nick baskets from campers, but we stole honey from our bees, and boy, was that ever fun! (REALLY!) Our honey is from local wild flowers, and is raw (unpasteurized), unfiltered (so it contains beneficial pollen), dark, sweet, and rich. Our small batch will sell out fast, so plan to come to the farm today from 1:00-5:00 to get yours before it sells out.

Our farm is at 5066 Rowell RD, Lancaster, and we have a small sign in the front yard. Your navigator will guide you to us easily.

It’s a Scorcher, so How about a Nap in the Shade?

Farmer Bob doesn’t mind working in this heat, but every farmer knows how important it is to take a nap in the shade.

Come See Us, Y’all!

We love having visitors come and tour our farm, and these are some terrific photos taken by one of our farm friends during a recent tour. I carry my camera around in my hip pocket but I’m so busy enjoying our visitors and telling them about the farm that I forget to take pictures, so I appreciate it when our farm friends share their photos with me. 🙂
